The Biden Family announced on Saturday that their son Joseph “Beau” Biden III passed away, at the age of 46, after a bout with cancer.
The Biden Family said in a statement released via the Vice President’s office, “It is with broken hearts that Hallie, Hunter, Ashley, Jill and I announce the passing of our husband, brother and son, Beau, after he battled brain cancer with the same integrity, courage and strength he demonstrated every day of his life. The entire Biden family is saddened beyond words.”
Beau Biden was admitted to Walter Reed Hospital in Maryland on May 22, 2015. He had some neurological health issues in 2010 and 2013.
In 2010, Beau Biden had a mild stroke and in 2013 he underwent surgery in order to remove a lesion from his brain.
Before his passing, Beau Biden expressed his intentions to run for governor of Delaware. He served two terms as the state’s attorney general, but he decided against serving a third term because he wanted to focus on his campaign for governor.
Beau Biden also served in the military and did tours of duty in Kosovo and Iraq, where he served as a JAG attorney.
He was awarded a Bronze Star for his service during the Iraq War. Vice President Joe Biden expressed how proud he is of his son, “Beau embodied my father’s saying that a parent knows success when his child turns out better than he did. In the words of the Biden family Beau Biden was quite simply, the finest man any of us have ever known.”
Beau Biden is the oldest son of the Vice President and his first wife, Neilia Hunter, who passed away, along with their 1-year-old daughter Naomi Biden, on December 18, 1972 after a car accident.
The crash occurred approximately a month and 10 days after Joe Biden was elected to his first-term as a U.S. Senator.
Both then 4-year-old Beau Biden and his 3-year-old brother Robert Hunter Biden were injured in the crash.
Then Senator-Elect Joe Biden was sworn in as the U.S. Senator from Delaware at the hospital near Beau Biden’s bedside.
Robert Hunter Biden sat on his maternal grandmother’s lap as his father was sworn in. Then Senator-Elect Joe Biden’s father-in-law and his parents were also present during the swearing in ceremony.
According to the Associated Press, then Senator-Elect Biden made clear that his first priority was his sons and that he would step aside as a senator if he believed his job was getting in the way.
The Associated Press quoted Biden as saying, “I hope to be a good senator. But if there’s a conflict in six months or so between being a good senator and a good father, I will contact Gov. Sherman W. Tribbitt…You can always get another senator, but they can’t get another father.”
Vice President Joe Biden said that his sons were his “redemption” and that they helped him to get through that difficult time in their lives.
